"Free" means three different things in detective games. Some are free for good. Some give you the first case free and charge for the rest. And some are free only for the first few minutes. All three can be worth your evening, as long as you know which one you're opening.

Every game below plays in a web browser, and we checked each one on its own website in October 2026: what exactly is free, whether you need to sign up, and how long it takes.

We make DetectiveOS, whose free case is on this list. Everything else is a game we'd point a friend to.

Free for good

Murder Mystery For 2

Murder Mystery For 2 gives you a new case every day plus 4 more cases that stay free for good, with no ads. It's built for two players who each see different evidence (there's a solo mode too), and cases take 15 to 50 minutes. The rest of its cases cost $3.99 for 24 hours or $9.99 once.

The Fog Lane Murder (CouchEscape)

The Fog Lane Murder is a free 30-minute Victorian murder for exactly two players on a voice call, with no sign-up and no download. Every clue is split between your two screens, so you have to talk your way to the answer.

Murdle

Murdle posts a new murder logic puzzle every day: who did it, how, where and why. It plays on the site with no account and no paywall, and the books are where it makes its money.

Super Detective

Super Detective releases five free cases every Monday, with no sign-up. Each is a logic puzzle on a floor plan: one person per row and column, and the killer is the only other person in the victim's room.

Type Help

Type Help is a free browser game on itch.io: you dig through the files on an old computer to work out what happened. It's inspired by Return of the Obra Dinn and Her Story, rated 4.9 out of 5 by players, and slow in the best way.

A free first case, then paid

Speak Now (DetectiveOS)

Speak Now is the free DetectiveOS case, and it's a whole case, not a demo: a bride stabbed with her own wedding-cake knife twenty minutes before her midnight toast, four suspects, two lies and one key card. You read the file, question the suspects in the interrogation room, catch each lie on the exact line with the evidence that breaks it, and name the killer. Most players finish in about an hour. It needs a free account, no card.

If you like it, the 8 full cases are bigger: 60 to 90 exhibits, five suspects and forensic tools, about 1½ to 2½ hours each, for $7.99 a case or $35.99 for all of them.

Cold Case Online

Cold Case Online gives you its first case free with no sign-up: a 1987 case with 26 documents and 6 suspects that takes 2 to 3 hours. You can play alone or in a room of up to eight. More cases are $9.99 each, or a weekly or yearly pass.

Unsolved Murder Mystery

Unsolved Murder Mystery has a free first case online with 30 documents, about 2 to 3 hours of reading and no hints. Without Premium, its rooms hold four players with text chat. Premium starts at $19.99 a week.

Cold Case Inc

Cold Case Inc has a free mini case, Flat 33, that takes 10 to 12 minutes. It asks for your name and email to send a sign-in link. Its full cases are £9.99 each and run one to four hours.

ColdCase Party

ColdCase Party lets you play the first objective of its first case free, no card, each player on their own device. The full case is $4.99.

Also free to start

  • Murder Mystery Time: a free case with no sign-up; the rest is a subscription.
  • Your Scenario: free credits to question AI-generated suspects in your own words, then a subscription.

What to check before you start

  • Is it the whole case? A free first case is a real story with an ending; a free first objective stops halfway.
  • Do you need an account? An account means your progress saves; no account means you can start in seconds.
  • What does the rest cost? One-time prices and subscriptions both appear above. Check before you get attached.
  • Laptop or phone? Daily puzzles are fine on a phone. Big case files are much nicer on a bigger screen.

The verdict

For a free puzzle every day, Murdle and Super Detective. For two players, Murder Mystery For 2 and The Fog Lane Murder. For a long free read, Cold Case Online or Type Help. And for a whole free case with an interrogation room where you catch the lie yourself, play Speak Now on DetectiveOS.
